[Presentation] Imparting Meanings to Numbers
A number is one of the competitiveness in presentations.
The power of number is much bigger and more effective than what we think; it not only arouses audiences’ interests but also derives ‘sympathy’ from audiences much easier when explaining the meaning of numbers.
However, one thing to be careful of is that the ‘meanings’ included in the number is what’s important to audiences – not the ‘number’ itself.
Numbers that can develop a bond of sympathy – let’s find out ‘how you can impart meanings to numbers’.
Presentation, impart meanings to numbers
When you have to prove what you have presented during your presentation or provide numbers that will back up your presentation contents,
make sure that to no show too many numbers that may pace a burden on audiences and attach specific meaning to the numbers.
# There are certain numbers that are close to living?!
You must explain the meanings for numbers based on the contents that are close to audiences’ life.
For example, Baskinrobbins 31 imparted the number 31 in their brand name to deliver the message of ‘one flavor each day of the month’ to consumers.
31 types of ice cream with new flavors throughout 31 days.
Not just ‘a place where you can taste various types of ice cream’, but one month (31 days) that has close relations with our daily life ; this was the meaning that was imparted.
Like the strategy, people think of 31 different types of ice cream whenever they see the number ‘’31’ from the Baskinrobbins brand logo and the number as recognized as a special number to consumers.
# There are certain numbers that audiences can relate to?!
If you show your audiences the numbers as it is, they will not understand the meanings of the numbers.
When you introduce specific ‘numbercal values’ during presentation, you have to come up with a special message by attaching measnings to the numbers in order to have audiences understand and remember better.
“So far, we have 4,335,721 iPhones sold.”
“So far, we have more than 400 iPhones sold.”
“So far, we have an average of 20,000 iPhones sold per 1day.”
The numbers above only speaks of ‘simple numerical values’.
However, for the large numerical numbers, audiences will only recognize that many iPhones are sold and not remember the exact number of iPhones sold.
If you attach meanings to the number here and make the numbers something audiences can remember easily, audiences will be able to recognize the sales volume of iPhones more clearly.
“So far, we have 3 iPhones sold per a second.”
‘3 iPhones sold per 1 second’ will be more touching to audiences than saying ‘4 million iphones sold’ or ‘avg. 2 million iPhones sold per a day’.
Like this, when you show numbers, a meaningful explanation must follow.
To audiences, meaningless numbers are hard to remember.
# Presentations with meanings imparted numbers
Now you are aware of the reason why it’s important to attach meanings to numbers, let’s find out ‘how you can attach meanings to numbers’ in presentation.
This means that you must include messages when you use specific numerical numbers.
Steve Jobs was aware of ‘persuasive power of numbers’ more than anyone else, and did a good job applying well to his presentations.
In year 2001, iPod was first launched and introduced MP3 player with ‘5GB’- far bigger than any other mp3 players back then.
When Steve Jobs explained about the storage size of iPod, he decided to show the iPod directly and explain instead of showing a number that is meaningless to audiences or consumers.
‘You can save 1000 music in your pocket’
The numerical value of 5GB is shown to the audiences, the real meaning of this number in this presentation cannot be delivered directly to the audiences.
However, if the audiences here a number like 1000 music, the real meaning of this number will be delivered to the audiences and will be remembered.
Like this, if you attach meanings to the number considering factors that has close relations to audiences, you will be able to improve your power of persuasion.
